A Quest for Cool Budget Accommodations Around the World - an article by Darn Good Digs.

We both work in education, and have found that many of the teachers we know share our goal of finding cool, laid back places to stay on a limited budget.

Darn Good Digs

They also share our goal of supporting local owners with unique visions. Unfortunately, finding these extraordinary, yet affordable, places to stay is not easy, and that is how our new website, darngooddigs.com, came to be.

Our mission at Darn Good Digs is to create a world-wide community of travelers to share these amazing accommodations. On our website, travelers nominate their all-time favorite places to stay. Our research team then scours the internet, guidebooks, and magazines to determine which hotels are truly the best of the best, and these we call Darn Good Digs.

All Darn Good Digs are independently owned (most are locally owned too) and all have rooms from US$1 to $150. The site includes an original review of each hotel written by the nominating traveler, photographs, a map, and links for additional information.

Two of our favorite Darn Good Digs are The Beehive, in Rome, Italy, and the Cape Trib Exotic Fruit Farm in Queensland, Australia. The Beehive is centrally located by the Termini Train Station, and offers both private rooms and a dormitory, with prices ranging from US$25 - $100.

We were impressed by the modern décor, garden, and vegetarian café.  The Cape Trib Exotic Fruit Farm offers two raised cottages in the Daintree Rainforest on a working exotic fruit farm for US$90 - $105. Breakfast is served on your own porch and includes a huge plate of exotic fruit fresh from the farm.

Getting new nominations is definitely the most fun part of running our website.  We launched darngooddigs.com back in May 2008 with ten reviews, and we are growing every month with amazing nominations from our readers. We would be thrilled if you would visit our site, join our email list, and if you’ve stayed at any extraordinary places that you’d like to share, go ahead and nominate them.
