Why Everyone Must Witness the Summer Olympics

Occurring every four years, the Summer Olympics is the most prestigious sporting event and international event in the world. Showcasing the best of the best athletes representing their nation and competing for Olympic gold and living a dream. With over 10,000 athletes represented. More than twenty-five sports. Over 300 events. This is something only the summer Olympics can contain at that level of competition. Not only are the games competitive, but the bidding process for the games are just as competitive.

Athletes representing their sport and their country of citizenship compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals. It is a rare opportunity for countries to put their differences aside for a short time and come together in sportsmanlike competition. This is the closest we get to seeing people from across the world act in harmony. For two short weeks every four years athletes put everything on the line.

Imagine working for something for four years, only to leave empty handed with nothing, except the tenacity and enthusiasm to try again next time. For most athletes this is the harsh fate they encounter, for others it can be great triumph and hard work paid off. To witness and see this obstacle is a once in a lifetime treat.

Not mention being in the host country during this time. To witness the opening and closing ceremonies is like going to the biggest entertainment event of the year. It is the world's great melting pot of athletes coming together and expressing joy, courage, and patriotism for their country. You also get to witness great culture and meet people from all around the world, and from all different walks of life. Not only will you find die hard sports fans at the summer Olympics, but you will find many countrymen making the pilgrimage to see the best of the best compete. Witnessing the Olympics first hand is watching history unfold before you, and imagine being there watching the action! This is a spectacle that cannot go unmissed for any sports fan and non sports fan alike.

The upcoming Summer Olympics will be held in London, England 2012.

Recently, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil won the bid for 2016. So if you are looking for an once-in-a-lifetime educational and inspirational sporting event, take advantage of the summer Olympics.

Publisher's Note:

We're Very Excited to welcome our new Sports Editor, Robert Tuchman, to Wandering Educators!

When Robert Tuchman graduated from Boston University, Tuchman was quickly forced to abandon his dream of becoming a sports reporter. Applications to sports producers across the country were ignored and eventually he accepted a position as an investment advisor at Lehman Brothers in New York.

Still wanting to break into the sports industry, he joined Sports Profiles after reading about them in Entrepreneur magazine, working out of his apartment selling sports magazine advertisements. Quickly realizing that everyone to whom he sold ads wanted the perks (tickets to games or luxury trips to events) more then the ads, he decided to start a business that catered to this niche called Tuchman Sports Enterprises (TSE).

Within two years of working out of that tiny one-bedroom Upper East Side apartment, with one phone and a fax machine, his company was named to the annual Inc. 500  list of America's fastest growing privately held companies and as one of the top 100 promotion agencies by Promo Magazine.  He started TSE with no money and no investors and ended up selling it to private equity buy out firm Pfingsten Partners who launched Premiere Global Sports. Last year PGS earned over $70 million dollars in sales. Robert Tuchman now serves as President of that division, still guiding his company in its new form.

He writes the series “The Show Must Go On” for ESPN.com.  He also writes a monthly column for Entrepreneur.com called “Young, Fearless, and Fed Up" as well as a column called “On-Site” for Incentive Magazine, an industry trade for incentive and meeting planners. He is the author of  The 100 Sporting Events You Must See Live, a sports travel book as well as Young Guns, The Fearless Entrepreneurs Guide To Chasing Your Dreams and Breaking Out on Your Own.

A favorite commentator on the sports industry, you may have seen him recently discussing  sports business on “Anderson Cooper 360” or the “CBS Morning News.” A frequent guest on “Your World with Neil Cavuto,” he has also appeared on CNN, the “CBS Morning News,” BET, and has been featured in USA Today, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and Entrepreneur.
