Michigan State University's Kresge Art Museum Events: Feb 2010

KRESGE ART MUSEUM EVENTS: 02/22/10 through 03/01/10
CURRENT EXHIBITION
American Modernism, 1920s-1940s
through March 14, 2010
Kresge Art Museum
This exhibition of over 100 works of art from the collection focuses on the three decades from the 1920s through the 1940s, and on those artists who specifically sought to create an artistic approach that was novel, inventive and forward looking. Modernists embraced new approaches, materials, technology and the age of the machine, and rejected history and tradition. By using significant and representative works of art including many that have been on view infrequently, this exhibition seeks to acquaint the viewer with some of the myriad approaches artists took to convey modernism, to introduce a number of now-forgotten artists, and to see many others anew. Sponsors: MSU Federal Credit Union.
Friends of Kresge Acquisition Highlights
Ongoing throughout 2010
On-line exhibition
Since its founding in 1975, the Friends of Kresge Art Museum (KAM) has worked closely with KAM directors to provide financial support for acquisitions and educational programming. To honor Friends, this on-line exhibition features 40 Friends’ acquisitions. These works of art span 2,500 years of history and represent a wide variety of media, and are some of the most important and well-known objects in the collection. Scroll over the timeline to reveal images and descriptions of a Corinthian vase and Renaissance and Baroque paintings to modernist sculpture and significant Michigan artists. The breadth of art history, diverse cultures and artistic media represented in the exhibition offer excellent teaching and learning opportunities.
Discoveries: Research, Science and Seeing the Collection
Ongoing throughout 2010
On-line Exhibition
Visit this interesting on-line exhibition that reveals secrets behind several objects in the museum collection, uncovered by old-fashioned, gumshoe curatorial investigation. New insights into works of art in the collection can result from scientific analysis and conservation treatment, careful looking, art historical research, and sometimes by chance. An object is not always what it seems!

Seven works of art by African-American women artists from the museum collection are on view. They include sculpture, mixed media and prints by Allison and Betye Saar, Lorna Simpson, Renee Stout and others and date from the 1980s through the 1990s.
