CURRENT EXHIBITIONS
Class Pictures: Photographs by Dawoud Bey
October 24-December 18, 2009
Opening reception October 25, 2-4 pm, with artist expected to attend
Kresge Art Museum
In these forty large yet intimate color portraits, the photographer
Dawoud Bey closely collaborated with high school students from diverse
economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds to create a compelling portrait
of contemporary American youth. Their own texts accompany the
photographs and together, portray a remarkable and compelling complexity
and strength. The exhibition is organized by Aperture. Catalogue
available.
John Pfahl, Altered Landscapes
October 24-November 30, 2009
Perspectives Gallery
Kresge Art Museum
Over half of the entire portfolio (48 photographs) of Pfahl's seminal
work, Altered Landscapes, from the KAM collection will be on view. In
the days before digital manipulation, Pfahl physically altered the
landscape by adding various objects to it, so carefully and
painstakingly placing them that the illusion of belonging is convincing.
This series helped to establish Pfahl at the forefront of color
photography.
Discoveries: Research, Science and Seeing the Collection
Ongoing through 2009
50th Anniversary On-line Exhibition
This on-line exhibition shows the usually hidden aspects of curatorial
work. New insights into works of art in the collection can result from
scientific analysis and conservation treatment, careful looking, and art
historical research. An object is not always what it seems.
Visit KAM and past exhibitions on-line at www.artmuseum.msu.edu and
access the cell phone tour from home.
