Gourmet Getaways Update

Do you like healthy and flavorful mixed together with light gourmet flair? If so, check out the cooking classes offered at Lake Austin Spa Resort in 2009-10. In December 2009, cookbook author and Food Network hostess Sara Moulton will be a feature guest, offering a daily, week-long program of cooking demonstrations; in January, the Washington Post dubbed “Julia Child of Asian Cuisine” Corinne Trang will offer her style of oriental cooking for one week; and in February, James Beard Award-winning cookbook author Joanne Weir will introduce students to her Mediterranean-California cuisine. For more information, visit www.lakeaustin.com.

Institute of Culinary Education offers a program on the Techniques of Healthful Cooking. The classes on food preparation, which are designed to avoid stress on the waistline, will place emphasis, not on the omission of calories or on food deprivation, but instead on the intelligent use of modification. This three-session program introduces students to ways to use herbs and spices to give a tasty lift to meals; the light dishes for beginning or ending the day; and those festive meals for entertaining friends and family – without forsaking healthy, light cooking. Diane Carlson of the Conscious Gourmet has moved her nutrient-rich, whole-food eating program from Greenwich, CT to Santa Fe, NM, where she will be offering a teacher’s training program in preparing natural foods for individuals interested in mastering both culinary skills and theory.
