If you’re going Tybee Island, GA and you love pizza, you’ve got to go to Cousin Vinny’s. For starters, this restaurant has an excellent covered outdoor patio with misters to keep you cool in the summer months. My family ate there with our dog, and she was very welcomed by our excellent waiter.

Everglades National Park - there is truly no other place like it on earth. This is the largest subtropical reserve in the United States. Not surprisingly, its climate brings intense summer heat, rain and humidity. It is not a swamp, as it is often referred to be, but rather a slow-moving river that flows southwest just ¼ mile per day. Everglades National Park is an important wetland that has been named a World Heritage Site.

As a former travel writer and children’s book author, I have had the great pleasure of meeting many elementary age children in South Florida from so many backgrounds. From low and no income families to the most privileged children in private academies, the students at the schools and libraries I visit are eager to learn. Each school visit is wonderfully unique, yet one aspect remains the same. 

Children are significantly lacking in basic geography knowledge.
