This February, Mills Gallery will host a powerful and emotionally charged exhibition titled "The Scream of Miroslav," featuring the work of Cuban artist Miroslav de la Torre Kozorez. Curated by acclaimed Cuban-American artist Rafael Hernández as part of his Grand Art Society initiative, this exhibition promises to shake audiences with its poignant narratives and bold visual storytelling.
Rafael Hernández was captivated by his unframed canvases and powerful depictions of exile, memory, and resilience. Recognizing a rare and urgent voice, Rafael provided both artistic support and curatorial direction, connecting Miroslav with Mills Gallerist Boris Garbe and Executive Director Juan Pablo Santa Luna.
The exhibition explores three thematic pillars: freedom, exile and identity, and better futures. With pieces such as 'Insilio', 'Holodomor', and 'Camagüey', Miroslav presents deeply symbolic and haunting scenes that merge reality and fantasy.
This marks Miroslav’s U.S. debut and signals the launch of Rafael’s broader mission to mentor emerging immigrant artists through his platform, which is designed to create impact, foster community, and spotlight voices that have long been silenced.
"This is not just about art. It’s about redemption, connection, and visibility," says Hernández. "Miroslav’s work speaks for so many who’ve had no stage. My job is to make sure the world hears them."
The opening reception will take place at Mills Gallery on January 29th at 6:30 pm. The exhibition will be open to the public, and part of the proceeds will support organizations aiding immigrant and refugee communities.
“Freedom is a gift, Freedom is oxygen for an artist. I’m very happy to show my true art to people for the first time.” - Miroslav de la Torre Kozorez
