Cannery Pier Hotel

Cannery Pier Hotel, in the charming northern Oregon coastal town of Astoria, is truly unique. Built on the site of the former Union Fish Cannery – in fact on the original 100-year-old pilings – the hotel offers guests unparalleled views of a real working river, as well as views of the shipping lanes out to Cape Disappointment Lighthouse and nearby Washington.

There are many good reasons why Cannery Pier was included on National Geographic’s 2008 Stay List. Designed and created by owner Robert Jacob, an Astoria native, this project was thirteen years in the making. The Cannery Pier Hotel artfully combines the history of the original Union Fisherman’s Cooperative Packing Company Cannery on its original dock site with the amenities and luxuries of an upscale boutique hotel. From the exposed steel beams and wooden trusses to the historical cannery labels and photographs lining the walls, the Hotel reflects both the architecture and heritage of the original 1900's Union Fish Cannery Building.

Each room has a private viewing deck and is lavishly well-appointed with a fireplace, hardwood floors, microwave, refrigerator and high-speed Internet access. Every room also has a view of the water, even from the bathtubs. Deluxe rooms are spacious and luxurious; one-bedroom suites are like a small apartment and perfect for longer stays or families, with a pull-out sofa. The Pilot House is a private fifth-floor, two-bedroom residence with stunning views from two private decks and a full kitchen.

A complimentary Continental breakfast is served each morning, and there is a library, laundry and gift boutique onsite. The entire hotel is adorned with fantastic old photos of the site, Astoria and the maritime history, and a walk through this pictorial history is a must. Take advantage of the full-service Cannery Day Spa, fitness room, hot tub or the authentic Finnish sauna. Or grab a couple of the complimentary day-use cruiser bicycles to ride around town in style.

But the real pleasure of Cannery Pier Hotel lies in the small things. Binoculars and a ship-watching guide are provided in each room; homemade chocolate chip cookies are in a basket at the front desk in the afternoons; and every day from 5-6 is a guest reception with wine, cheese, crackers and local smoked salmon in the lobby. Cannery Pier Hotel even has a gorgeous, chauffeured set of classic cars on call to drive guests to dinner or around town: a 1938 Packard, 1939 Buick, and 1945 Cadillac – all for complimentary use.
