NIBBS and Breakfasts: Fine Inns in Newport, RI

NIBBS and Breakfasts: Fine Inns in Newport, RI

When one says NIBBS it conjures up a snack cracker in my mind, yet in Newport, RI, NIBBS refers to thirty or so stunningly preserved historic inns.  An acronym for Newport County Inns and Bed and Breakfasts Association, a tour of these striking restored inns takes one down narrow colonial streets, past the clapboard houses on the Hill and Point districts to the stately mansions along Bellevue Avenue.  Each of the NIBBS inns offers a distinctively different feel; most are within walking distance or an easy trolley ride of Newport’s shopping, restaurants, galleries, museums, mansions, and waterfront.  Newport is home to more than 200 inns and B&Bs, so this story barely scratches the surface.  Yet, it will introduce six lovely inns, offering insight into the distinction being a Newport County Inns and B&B Association member.

Victorian Skylar B&B: For those who love the grace of the Victorian era, this B&B offers the chance to spend time in a circa 1892 home, filled with Victorian artifacts and reminiscences.  Yet, travelers will find all the modern comforts too, with pillowtop mattresses, TVs, DVDs, wi-fi and a gourmet breakfast served on fine china. In the warmer months, don’t miss the lovely rear garden. If you get the chance to try the white chocolate, cranberry scones, you’re in for a real treat!

Victorian Ladies Inn:  This collection of three Victorian buildings is nestled among walkways, secret gardens and koi ponds. Some of the rooms offer private entrances, making them perfect for those traveling with pets. It’s just a three-block walk to the beach and Cliff Walk, so plan to bring Fido or Fifi and your sneakers to explore, but be back by 4pm for the complimentary afternoon tea. You won’t want to miss the buffet breakfast either, compete with fresh fruit and hot entrees.

Ivy Lodge: The grand wood paneled foyer of this Greek Revival sets the tone for the WOW factor you’ll find at this inn, known to attract singers and celebs like Don McLean and David Clayton Thomas (of Blood, Sweat & Tears).  Two-room family suites also double as romantic accommodations if you leave the kids home, with deep Jacuzzi tubs, fireplaces and plenty of room. Take time to enjoy the huge ivy-covered porch or visit with other guests in the large living room here. Breakfast here is also a feast of fresh baked items and hearty entrees.

Hydrangea House: Even if you come when the gorgeous hydrangea bushes aren’t in bloom, you’ll still enjoy the charm of this inn in the historic old quarter of Newport. Amenity-filled rooms include double showers, huge Jacuzzis and palatial beds. Don’t be fooled by the mirrors here.  They’re actually cleverly concealed TVs.  Catch the yellow trolley right outside the inn to tour the mansions. The Oak Room, bigger than most studio apartments, has its own address (Oak Room at 20 Bellevue).

Spring Seasons Inn and Tea Room:  The first thing you’ll notice is the beautiful hand painted mural that follows the stairs up to the second floor.  My favorite room is the Newport Suite with a deep double Jacuzzi tub, hand painted vases on the walls and a private roof deck.  Choose from 20 varieties of teas in the Tea Room, and the scones with homemade jam are to die-for in the tea room.   For tea-time collectors, there’s a lovely array of tea-themed gifts here too.

Armistead Cottage:  Enter onto the porch with its wicker chairs and you have no idea what kind of a surprise you’re in for.  Even when you catch a glimpse of the Venetian-styled dining room with its Murano glass chandelier, you still don’t realize what’s to come.  Then, step into the Carrot Museum, and you know you’re in a one-of-a-kind B&B. Ramona, the co-owner here calls herself “the Carrot Queen”, and it’s likely that her collection of 2000+ carrot toys, clothes, jewelry, books and more qualifies her for that title. My favorite: The 3-carrot ring!
