Wandering the aisles at Grand Rapids Comic Con, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the goodness. But as we walked by Corinne Roberts' booth, we did a full stop (don't worry, no one crashed into us). Her art drew us in with its playfulness, creativity, and intelligence. Once we started talking with her, I KNEW our Wandering Educators would be interested in her art...and books.

She writes and illustrates the ongoing web comic series Out and About. She has written/illustrated Trip to Trekka and Imaginary Sea 1,2,3! Along with her books, she illustrated the web comic, Kitty Game and the card game, Unreal Estate.

Without further ado, the words and art of Corinne Roberts...

Artist of the Month: Corinne Roberts

How long have you been an artist?
I’ve always liked doing art but it wasn’t until late high school that I decided I wanted to pursue it as a career.

Is your art your full-time career?
It is!

Do you have favorite places you like to create?
I love doing most of my artwork at home but I’ve gotten better about creating on the go. There’s rarely a perfect place or time to create. You just have to do it!

What materials do you prefer?
Watercolor and pen are my favorite medium to work in.

Where/How are you inspired?
I’m not sure. Books, movies, and animation are probably the biggest influences but inspiration can strike at any time.

How do you know when your piece is done?
I’m either tired of it, or depending of the size of the piece, I will time myself. I live by that saying “it doesn’t have to be perfect, it has to be done.” Sometimes, simply walking away from a piece gives you clarity that the piece is done and you can move onto another one.

Do you work on one or more pieces at a time?
Yes! Watercolor needs time to set-up. I always have other projects to work on so I don’t get tempted to over work a piece because I wasn’t willing to let it dry.

If you were not an artist, what would you do?
Work at a law office or be a full time adventurer.
