MRC - Putting ABILITIES to Work

I thought I knew about all of the Art Organizations in my area. I sure was wrong!

My artist friend and I decided to go to the Kalamazoo Art Hop, a couple of Fridays ago. I suggested that we start at the "Park Trades Center," which is a very, very large venue that is home to many, many artist's studios. My friend had never been there, and it was quite a few years ago since my exploring of the building. I was pleasantly surprised that it had at least doubled in area since my last visit.

As we entered, we both noticed some very colorful, child like art work in the hallway. Both of us are what the art world calls, "Outsider Artists," and seeing this work displayed in the hall, was like walking in to our heads! We followed the art, and came to a huge working studio, that actually had three gallery areas. There was art all over the place! People, too!

I was handed a business card, which displayed a work of art. The woman who gave me the card welcomed us, and informed us that she was one of the artists on display, and that she painted the colorful cat faces. As soon as I could focus long enough to read the card, (I was still in awe of all the art!) This is how the card read: "MRC Putting Abilities to Work. MRC's mission is to provide support and encouragement to individuals living with a disability to achieve their fullest potential through employment, skill building, and active community involvement."

The MRC Artists Co-op provides adults living with developmental disabilities an outlet to achieve creative self- expression in a way that promotes personal growth, dignity, and self-confidence. MRC strives to enrich the community with the diversity of art as well as creating socialization opportunities for the artists. MRC takes part in the Art Hops, provide professional exhibition opportunities, and promote and market artist work through a variety of venues. All of the artists receive a commission for sale of their work, which not only serves as their source of income, but also enhances and reinforces their self esteem and their self-worth. MRC's Artists Co-Op provides a safe, positive, and creative environment that focuses on the individual's abilities, rather than their disabilities.

My friend and I spent our "Art Hop time" in this gallery. There was so much to see, and meeting some of MRC's artists was a privilege and honor for me.

I purchased several pieces for my private collection, and have since gone back during the week to observe the artists at work, talk with them, and find more treasures for my ever growing collection of art.
