The Ninth Annual Gullah-Geechee Rice Celebration

The Ninth Annual Gullah-Geechee Rice Celebration will take place from Friday, April 22 2011 through Easter Sunday, April 24 2011, at Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Come celebrate the historical contributions of the African American— Gullah-Geechee—people to Georgetown County, South Carolina - and the historical significance of those contributions.

 

Gullah Rice Festival

                                                                

There will be Gullah educational events such as cultural lectures; artisans such as sweet grass basket sewer, Vera Manigault; local hammock makers; boat, Mr. Willie De Reef; quilt maker, Bunny Rodrigues with her Michelle Obama Family History Quilt and a CAAHO Quilt show; and folk artists.  Merchants and Gullah food vendors will also be on hand.

Gullah Chit chat and entertainment at the Gullah Museum & Gullah O’oman Shop at the corner of Waverly Road and Petigru Dr. on  Friday April 22. 

The Rice Celebration/Festival at Parkersville Park on Saturday April 23, and the Easter Sunday Gullah worship service at the St. John A M E Church on Sunday April 24th.

 

This event is sponsored by the Gullah Geechee Rice Celebration Committee, The Gullah Historical and Cultural Society of Georgetown County, local churches and the community, local business organizations, the Georgetown County Recreation and Leisure Services Department, and the Committee for African American History Observance.
