Whether you're looking to treat yourself, take a break with your partner or gain some precious time with the family, there is no better option than a holiday abroad. In the UK we're lucky enough to have more than a handful of the world's finest holiday destinations just a short flight away. Looking ahead to 2013, here is a selection of the top resorts for the holiday season ahead.

Corfu

One of the most popular Greek islands among holidaymakers, Corfu offers a range of attractions for visitors. From fine local cuisine to glorious beaches, this Greek island truly has it all.

For a bit of peace and quiet without missing out on the buzz of Corfu Town, look to pay a visit to Agios Gordios. The town is home to one of the island's finest beaches and is within easy travelling distance of Paleokastritsa, another great beach location. Corfu Town itself is a great bet if you are looking for something a little bit more lively. Consider hiring a car to get the most from what the island has to offer.

Turkey

Turkey has cemented its reputation as one of Europe's finest holiday destinations in recent years. What is truly unique about Turkey is its atmosphere, which blends the cultures of east and west seamlessly. Only in Turkey is it possible to hear the calls of a local mosque whilst watching a Champions League game with the passionate locals.

Those looking for a healthy serving of sun, sand and sea should look to the Mediterranean south coast, which is home to some spectacular beaches. The north coast offers a wonderful contrast with a wealth of trekking opportunities through some breathtaking natural scenery.

If possible, be sure to make a visit to the capital city of Istanbul. Here you will experience the depths and wonders of Turkish culture in all its glory. With quaint cobbled side-streets meandering through authentic street markets and the smell of fresh coffee and tea permeating the city, there are few cities in Europe which offer a more exotic example of rich foreign culture.

Algarve

Holidays to the Algarve have, for a long time, been held in high esteem. Classy beach destinations are scattered across the coast and a journey from one to another is often punctuated by a short stop in a picturesque village. If you get the chance to visit one such village for lunch or dinner then it is well worth doing so – they are renowned for offering authentic, locally sourced wonders at an affordable price.

The Algarve region really does offer the traveller the ability to spend their holiday as they choose. With a mix of lively bars and secluded villages on offer, visitors to the area won't take long to fall for its many charms. From Faro, take your pick of the local resorts and, no matter what you're looking for, you won't be let down. Once again, it is well worth renting a vehicle if you are keen to get the most from the region.
