Gisela! or: The curious and memorable ways of luck
A musical theatre piece by Hans Werner Henze, Christian Lehnert and Michael Kerstan

World premiere

Pierre Audi directs Gisela! or: The curious and memorable ways of luck,  Hans Werner Henze’s new musical theatre piece for the Ruhr region. With it, Henze tries to join extreme positions and make seemingly impossible combinations possible. Covering the range from traditional Commedia dell’Arte improvisations to Brothers Grimm romanticism that turns into nightmares, the piece above all is about deep and profound emotions. Main character Gisela meets her one true love Gennaro in Naples. She’ll gladly drop her German fiancé if only the new Italian lover is willing to discover the beautiful aspects of Oberhausen. Devious machinations and extreme machismo behavior are eventually put to rest when, without warning, Mount Vesuvius erupts.

Involving young performers and audiences is a key goal for the composer. Therefore young musicians and actors working in the Ruhr region will be involved in the world premiere production to discover, develop, challenge and showcase their creative potential.

A world premiere presented by the Ruhrtriennale. Commissioned by the Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden and the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 for  »The Henze Project«.

Location: Maschinenhalle Zeche Zweckel, Gladbeck – September 25, 28, 30. September and October , 3, 6 an8 at 7:30 pm.
