Malik Benchikh paints moods!

In some cases, this French painter’s work is dark and stormy with sharp, purposeful brushstrokes, while other paintings show light and colorful pieces with lyrical brushstrokes. In both cases, he means business and absolutely allows part of himself to flow upon the surface. He gives up a bit of himself in each painting.  

You can read, in this interview, he is a man of few words and many visions. As he states, this began early in his life. He began challenging his teachers at an early age, and he continues today by challenging viewers to explore what their own feelings tell them about what they are viewing.

We now present to you Abstract French Painter Malik Benchikh.

How long have you been an artist?

I have been an artist since I was 16 years old and began to study arts at the  Ecole de Beaux-Arts d’Oran and Algiers for 4 years. But I have known that I was an artist since Kindergarden, where I preferred to illustrate a poem rather than learn it by heart. The teacher was annoyed and didn’t know how to give me marks.

Depuis quand êtes-vous artiste?
Depuis l'âge de 16ans quand j'avais entamé des études à l'école des beaux-arts d'Oran et d'Alger pendant 4ans.
Mais cette vocation m'a été révélé dès l'école primaire, quand je préférais illustrer une récitation au lieu de l'apprendre par cœur, l’instituteur était dans l'embarras il ne savait comment me noter.

Do you have favorite places you like to create?

I prefer to work in my studio and in the quiet.

Dans mon atelier et dans le calme.

Do you work with other artists?

Sometimes, when a common project needs to be done, but it doesn’t happen often (I have done it for one year, when I was working on the decorations for a theatre in Algeria).

Travaillez-vous avec d'autres artistes?
Quelquefois quand il y a nécessite de réaliser un projet commun mais rarement. (je l'ai fait pendant une année, en réalisant des décors pour le théâtre en Algérie).

What does a typical day look like? Is there a typical day?

That is a funny question as I am not a clerk, or working in a office.

First thing there is an idea of a painting which I will try to develop in my head, and then I will make some sketches before starting to paint. The painting can take a day or more, and I always work in solitude. Music accompanies me, but not always. When it comes to working discipline or regularity, no, I do not have that.

Comment se présente une journée typique?
Drôle de question, n'étant  pas un fonctionnaire. c'est d'abord l'idée d'une peinture que je vais essayer de preciser dans ma tête,  puis viennent des croquis  avant de me lancer dans la réalisation, qui peut prendre une journée ou plus et toujours dans la solitude , la musique m'accompagne mais pas toujours. Quant à la discipline de travail ou la régularité, ça non je l'ai pas.

Where/How are you inspired?

My inspiration can surface at any place. Things that offend my sensitivity sometimes become subjects for paintings, but not always, as I also love when a painting speaks for itself.

Où et comment êtes-vous inspiré?
mon inspiration peut survenir n'importe où. Les choses qui heurtent ma sensibilité deviennent quequefois des sujets de peinture, mais pas toujours, car j'aime aussi quand la peinture parle pour elle-même.

Do you work on one or more pieces at a time?

Yes, that happens often.

If you were not a painter/sculptor/photographer, etc., what would you do?

I would write tales for children.

Si vous n'étiez pas peintre que voudriez-vous faire?
créer des contes pour enfants.

How can our readers find and purchase your art?

For now I am busy to produce a body of work, and I haven’t yet found a recipe for how to exhibit my work.
