ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF EARTHQUAKE IN HAITI MARKS THE CONSTRUCTION OF INSPIRATION VILLAGE

The Marlins and Food For The Poor Campaign, “Homes for Haiti”, to Build Village for Earthquake Victims

MIAMI – The Marlins and Food For The Poor are proud to announce that construction has begun on Inspiration Village in Haiti. The Marlins held a campaign in 2010 to raise funds to build much-needed housing in Haiti. One year after the devastating earthquake, this dream has become a reality.

Donations to the Homes for Haiti campaign have led to the construction of a new village consisting of 25 two-room houses with personal sanitation units. The community will receive a water well, solar powered water purification unit, and a community center that will provide the opportunity for further education in agricultural practices and animal husbandry, as well as continuing vocational skills training. These services will assist the farmers in achieving maximum results from their efforts in order to support their families and make the community sustainable. Dedication of Inspiration Village is scheduled for Mid-March 2011.

Marlins catcher, John Baker, along with members of the Marlins front office embarked on a scouting trip in 2010 to see the destruction first hand.  During their stay the Marlins toured Cap-Haitien, home of the relief project, along with the Shada Community, a town composed of 3,500 homeless families, some of which will soon call Inspiration Village home. Upon return, the Marlins launched the Homes for Haiti Campaign, which raised funds and awareness for the construction of Inspiration Village.

“We are proud to have reached our goals and to be part of this great mission to build homes in Haiti,”
said Angela Smith, Director of Community Outreach. “Thanks to the efforts of all those that contributed to this campaign 25 displaced families will have a home to call their own.”
