Iconic Audio Guides: the Acropolis

We've shared our love of Iconic Guides' Audio Guides before - with a review of the Iconic Guide audio guide to the Great Pyramid at Khufu, Giza. Created by Dr. Benedict Davies (one of our favorite people), Iconic Guides is an excellent way to learn about the ancient world. Currently, Iconic Guides offers a plethora of audio guides to Egypt, Japan, and Greece.

Today I'd like to share the Iconic Audio Guide to the Acropolis, in Athens, Greece. I've had a love for Greece since I was small and my aunt was studying there (and our daughter has been drawing the Parthenon since she could hold a pencil in her hand). We've also shared the Caryatid Project here on Wandering Educators -  a cool twist on teaching ancient history.

Acropolis

So without further ado, let's dig in. This guide, as with all Iconic Guides, is EXTENSIVE. Contents include:

   1.  An Introduction to the Acropolis
   2. The Propylaia
   3. The Sanctuary of Athena Nike
   4. The Parthenon
   5. The Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Polias
   6. The Periclean Odeion and the Theatre of Dionysos
   7. The Asklepieion, the Sanctuary of Asklepios
   8. The Odeion of Herodes Atticus
   9. The Statue of Athena

From the opening of this Iconic Guide, the clear voice of London-based Della Phillips tells us the history of the earliest monuments on the Acropolis, and shares the history of the site. Did you know that Persian forces ruined some of the earliest architectural treasures, and that Pericles had a vision for the Acropolis that would place Athens at the very center of the Greek Universe (5th c BC). His redevelopment of the Acropolis is what we see remains of today.

This audio guide delves into Greek history, politics, famous characters, architecture, art, mythology, and more. The section on the Erechtheion was of great interest to me, as I am always stunned by the korai (also known as the Caryatids).  However, I was intrigued by the entire audio guide, it was just that fascinating.

Acropolis

I loved reading of the history of the Acropolis, and imagining being there and walking around while listening and learning.

These guides are for the thinking traveler, written by a thinking traveller.

There's nothing like learning from an expert.

Details:
These audio guides are broken into short segments, so that you can take your time while exploring. They are reasonably priced (each about £2.99), and you can pay through paypal. The download will then available for 72 hours (like you won't download it in the first minute, you're so excited?). You can bundle audio guides if you'd like for a discount, although each location is available separately.

We HIGHLY recommend Iconic Audio Guides to our Wandering Educators.

Note: We received a review copy of this audio guide to the Acropolis - thank you, Iconic Guides!
