Traveling and Eating with Laptop Lunch Bento Boxes

I have always loved bento boxes, but now we have something that is even MORE fun. We received a Laptop Lunches Bento Box for review.  Laptop lunches are so much fun - they are an easy travel bento box. I took it to summer camp and it was wonderful. Everyone asked questions about it! Many were jealous. They had never heard of a bento box, let alone a LAPTOP LUNCHES BENTO BOX. I love it because you can travel anywhere with it. The water bottle is an ice pack! I got a cute purple Laptop Lunches Bento box, and it comes with its own carrying case. It isn't too big, but you can sure pack a nice lunch in there. It is reusable, so it can help to save the earth.

The best part about the Laptop Lunches Bento Box is that it is completely portable, unobtrusive (not like my hello kitty lunch box, or my hello kitty bento box which is in the shape of her cat head), and very cleanly designed. The Laptop Lunches came with a recipe and healthy eating guidelines book, which was fun to explore. And, we're planning on taking it with us to Ireland and Scotland this fall, as an easy way to pack a snack while we're traveling.
Mom's note: I wish that all four of the containers inside had lids. Another fun part is making the food fit inside - it's like a math problem with food. We try to see what will fit best where, and play with arranging everything. If you know anything about bento, you know that what it looks like is important. Sometimes people make cute bento (charaben) and sometimes we do that. It's fun to play with your food!

We were lucky enough to chat with Amy Hemmert and Tammy Pelstring - the co-founders of Obentec/Laptop Lunches, about their fun and important company. Here's what they had to say...

WE: Please tell us about Laptop Lunches...

LL: Laptop Lunches are affordable, high quality, reusable meal containers designed for people on the go. They’re colorful and fun, made-in-the-USA,
and perfect for school, work, and travel.  Our bento-style containers prevent food from squishing, and they fit perfectly and compactly inside our
insulated carriers, which keeps food fresh for hours.

WE: What was the genesis of Laptop Lunches?

LL: We came up with the Laptop Lunches concept when our kids were in preschool and we noticed that most parents were packing highly processed, single-serve food items in their kids’ lunchboxes. This was not only contributing to the soaring obesity rates, but resulted in lots of packaging and food waste being sent to the landfill. We felt that if parents had the tools they needed to pack nutritious, waste-free lunches easily and conveniently, then
they would make the switch to packing fresh, whole foods. And they have—not only for their kids, but for themselves as well!

WE: The Laptop Lunchbox comes with a fantastic food guide - what are your top tips for eating healthfully?

LL: We encourage lunch-packers to exercise portion control.  Drink water instead of juice or fruit-flavored drinks to cut out sugar. Limit fats, sweets, and
sodium. Eat beans, nuts, and whole grains for protein instead of meat, eggs, and whole-dairy products. Purchase organic locally grown produce whenever
possible; people who eat high-fiber foods are less likely to overeat. Also, when packing lunches for kids, be sure to involve them in the lunch-making
routine. After all, even a two year-old can pick up a handful of steamed carrots to drop into her bento box.

WE: Is there anything else you'd like to share with us?

LL: We’re all set to roll out some exciting new products for the 2010 back to school season, including some new bento kits, new color combos, and some fun
bento tools and stickers.

WE: Thanks so very much, Amy and Tammy! We LOVE and use our Laptop Lunches Bento often - it's one of the busiest things in our kitchen! We highly recommend Laptop Lunches!
