Lake Michigan

Postcard from Onekama, Michigan

Tucked at the far end of a narrow road winding through crystal clear lake and towering sand dunes is my favorite of Michigan's countless local treasures. Portage Point Beach, officially known as Captain John Langeland Park, is located in the village of Onekama

Long a summer resort area, this beach is prized by locals and visitors alike for its gorgeous light colored sand, gentle swimming area, small lighthouse at the end of a pier (let the fishing commence!), and scenic views of enormous sand dunes along the northern shore.

The approximate 6,000 ships that have succumbed to raging storms attest to the power of the Great Lakes. As I traveled, writing and compiling information for my three-volume travel series that explores Michigan's coasts, I heard or read the tales left behind by those ill-fated ships. They add a somber, but compelling backdrop to Michigan’s waterways. The following story deviates from the shipwreck theme. In addition to the thousands of ships that surrendered to the waters of Lake Michigan, there is also one major aircraft that vanished into her angry waters.

You're in the right place - Michigan's Sunset Coast (aptly named, for the gorgeous sunsets!). The beaches on Lake Michigan are clean, sandy, and very swimmable. There are excellent restaurants, extraordinary artists, great music, and plenty of outdoor activities. It's my favorite place, in the whole world.
