Cochise County, Arizona sits like a corner puzzle piece in the southeast part of the state. Year-round, visitors come to this region to enjoy a welcoming climate filled with an abundance of attractions that meet the needs of adventure seekers, birders, foodies, wine connoisseurs, as well as history lovers. While in the region, Ira and I took a smorgasbord approach and sampled different aspects of the county…and experienced how history comes alive in Cochise County, Arizona.

A July 4 Salute to the U.S. Air Force

It’s a visual extravaganza of the history of flight, and the U. S. Air Force. It’s worth days of your time. It’s the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, located in Dayton, Ohio. It’s the world’s largest and oldest aviation museum – and it is an extremely powerful experience.

History Comes Alive in Tucson

Like other travelers, I selected Tucson for its geographical location. I wanted to embrace a dude ranch experience, and also sip margaritas while munching on southwestern guacamole as the sky became a canvas at sunset. I was looking for a laid back vacation that weaved together the accoutrements of a desert environment while simultaneously enjoying Mother Nature’s handiwork. If you don’t enjoy riding horseback through the arid desert, then skip the dude ranch and settle instead for one of Tucson’s full service resorts or city hotels.

Unexpected Treasures at America's Library: Heartfelt Friendship Between Nations

In 1926, America celebrated the 150th anniversary of its Declaration of Independence. To mark the occasion, citizens of Poland – more than 5.5 million of them – signed a unique birthday card, The Polish Declarations of Admiration and Friendship. Now, all 111 volumes containing more than 30,000 pages – many beautifully illustrated or accompanied by photographs – are digitized and accessible on the Library of Congress website.

The Art of Road Tripping, Part 2: Remaining Open

I drove from Utah to South Dakota yesterday, once again confirming that if I were a trucker, I’d be fired. I stopped along the way to look at interesting buildings, snap pictures with my iPhone, and once I even stopped to take a nap. I’ve travelled a lot in my life, but I’ve never achieved the air of a seasoned traveler. I am a clunky, curious sort, laboring forth with way too much emotional and literal baggage. Still, I am proud of the progress I’ve made so far on this journey.

I'm elated to share the extraordinary art of Rachel Alvarez, a native of Salisbury, Maryland. She received her BFA in Painting and Photography from Salisbury University in 2002. Her original work has been exhibited at a number of local galleries, and her prints, notecards, and decals can be found in shops across the United States. Her work is inspired by her 2 children. Each piece in her collection was completed during their nap times and reflects her family’s love for backcountry drives, beach outings, and hikes in the woods.

Mass Incarceration in the Land of the Free

Are Americans inherently conditioned to be criminals? Are we raised to wreak havoc on our communities by breaking the laws that are in place to protect us? My short answer is no. However, when looking at statistics, it is alarming that America is known as the world’s prime jailer. “Representing just 5 percent of the world’s population, we now hold 25 percent of its inmates. The “tough on crime” politics of the 1980s and 1990s fueled an explosion in incarceration rates.
