Context, organizer of critically acclaimed walking tours, expands its program in Vienna, with a new art and design tour led by experts in interior design, art history, and architecture. Made in Vienna gives travelers a surprising look at the city’s cutting-edge dynamic that remains virtually unknown to all but the native Viennese.

The tour takes on the common misperception that Vienna is known for traditional design by guiding travelers just south of the historical First district into Nebau. While exploring this unique part of the city, visitors will learn of the bold, socially conscious revolution that has quietly swept Vienna by storm and discuss the ever-changing nature of the city’s design and architecture. Context’s walk equips travelers with an understanding of just how modern Viennese design has become.

The walk is led by professors of design and architecture and by practicing designers in the Context network of local expert docents in Vienna.

The experience includes visits to some of Nebau’s hottest designer shops and an intricate look at what exactly makes this art so surprisingly chic. Throughout the walk, docents elaborate on the influence of the Czech and Hungarian borders on the influx of new ideas in design. Analysis of the emerging industrial design platform “Das Möbel” prompts discussion on the variation of styles by region. Noteworthy stops include the innovative Bakalowitz chandelier designers, and a visit to the two brothers of “Gebrueder Stitch,” where visitors will discuss hot topics such as sustainability and community involvement.

“Tradition does not have an old-fashioned, dusty smell here in Vienna,” says Gabriela Steiner-Scharfetter, expert in interior architecture and industrial design, who leads the walk. “Traditional craftsmanship is not denied, but worked with - craftsmen and designers develop together.”
