Playa Hermosa, the hidden beauty spot of the Nicoya Peninsula

Hermosa means beautiful in Spanish, and Playa Hermosa is exactly that. A ten minute drive north of the now well-known beach towns of Santa Teresa & Mal Pais lies the heavenly beach of Hermosa. The whole coastline has been transformed over the last five years rather dramatically. Surfers and A-listers alike have flocked here, ensuring that more development is definitely on the horizon. This is not good news for Santa Teresa, with small plots being built on, and where the roads are dustier by the day.

Playa Hermosa

Hermosa is a different story. It is a small area that doesn’t have the small spaces to be sold off, which in turn means large numbers of people living and renting in the area. It is fast becoming the area in which you find high-end places to stay (eg: www.batikcostarica.com) and has some A-list celebrities with second homes in the area, as well.

Its beaches are, in my opinion, the best between Manzanillo and Mal Pais. They are as wide as they are long, have consistent waves for the surfers as well as gentle white wash for the children to play in.

There is even bread made every day, along with freshly made pizza at a restaurant almost on the beach……now if that isn’t heavenly, I don’t know what is.

Let’s hope that it always stays this way.
