My first thought upon arriving in Yangshuo was: this place reminds me of the Smurfs. Yes, an ancient Chinese landscape brought to mind a long-dormant memory of a 1980s Saturday morning cartoon.

Blue Door, Blue Wall

One of the best books I have ever read is a story of hope through extraordinary tragedy and circumstances - They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky: The True Story of Three Lost Boys from Sudan. Written by Benson Deng, Alephonsion Deng, Benjamin Ajak, with Judy A. Bernstein, this book was difficult to put down.

While traveling, we try to get off the beaten path - both in the areas we travel, and in the foods and accommodations that we like. There's nothing worse than staying at a chain hotel while abroad - looks the same as it does in Chicago. Get out and experience the local culture - that's my motto.

I recently discovered a gem of a book about different customs around the world, entitled Going Dutch In Beijing. This book is full of information to smooth your path while abroad, while at the same time being interculturally sensitive.
