One of the joys of living near a city is the availability of delicious foods from around the world. When we head into Grand Rapids, Michigan, there are so many great restaurants to choose from. Yet one we keep returning to is The Pita House: Sami's Gyros. They have the Best Gyros in Michigan, hands down.

There are three locations to choose from. But the one we head to is a small restaurant inside a strip mall, on busy 28th street. And while 28th st. is loaded with great eating options, this is one of the best. Head inside, and stare at the menu for a bit. I do, even though I've been going there for years and years.

So, a tip: portions are HUGE. So while you think you may want to get a few different things, that might not be a good idea. Think Thanksgiving full if you do that. The staff is very friendly and generous with the toppings, so don't be afraid to ask for what you love. The service is fast and courteous. They certainly know what they are doing, don't skimp on the toppings, and are pros at creating delicious gyros!

While I am always curious about trying other menu items (because I love them all), I always end up with the gyro. It's fantastic - so stick with it, I say!

When ordering anything, you can choose exactly what toppings you want on it. LOOK:

So many toppings to choose from! Lettuce, Tomatoes, Onions, Green Peppers, Banana Peppers, Jalapeno Peppers, Cucumbers, Turnips, Black Olives, Cheese, Feta Cheese, Chickpeas, Parsley, Pickles, and Zaatar seasoning.

Our daughter skips the kids menu (which is not that great, so I'd advise your kids to do the same) and gets the Fried Chicago Cheese pita with all the fixings, because she loves that Zaatar seasoning so much.

I highly recommend the pink pickled turnips as a topping, as well as their incredibly delicious Tzatziki sauce. The pitas come in white or whole wheat, and are soft and very fresh. The meat is carved from a hot gyros chunk, and then crisped over the grill. Oh, the edges, so crispy and tasty.

Seating is in booths or at tables. You can get fountain drinks or bottled drinks from a cooler. There are many local awards on the walls (always a good thing), and (also always a good thing) clean bathrooms.

Highly recommended.
