Deciding upon the perfect holiday isn’t always easy. You may have a general idea of what you’d like to get from the trip (sun, sea, sand and everything else) but when it comes to choosing a specific place, it can get a little tricky. That’s why it’s helpful to do a little research before you book anything. Get scouring the internet, asking friends, looking in travel guides. Having a good idea of where you’d like to go in the New Year will really make selecting your holiday destination seem a doddle. However, if you’re still clueless of where to start, then don’t panic! From Fred Olsen cruises to Dutch forts, here’s our advice on the best places to visit in 2013.

Egypt

A trip to Egypt is a trip of discovery. There are so many sights for you to see and landmarks to explore, that tourists always feel that one visit is never enough. Most of us have heard of the Pyramids, and have even learnt about them at school, but how many of us have actually visited them? Existing as one of oldest manmade structures known to man, this wonder of the world entices thousands of visitors each year as a result of its breath-taking appearance and mysterious allure. But what’s the best way to see Egypt? A popular option is to take an Eastern Mediterranean cruise, as these not only allow you to enjoy the cultural delights of Egypt, but they also invite you to witness the beautiful sights of Italy, Gibraltar and much more. Perfect.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is one of the world’s hidden gems. Previously avoided because of the 2004 tsunami and its associations with war, this island has now emerged as one the world’s ‘go to’ places, and it’s easy to see why! There are an abundance of things to do whilst you’re there. From its gorgeous beaches on the east coast to its vibrant social scene, there are aspects for everyone to enjoy. A spot in particular which tends to attract many visitors is Yale National Park, which is the best place to check out if you’re a fan of wildlife. There are some stunning landscapes to be seen from this safari park, so if you are flying to Sri Lanka for 2013, be sure to visit it.

Madagascar

If you like to move it move it, then Madagascar is the place for you! Similar to Sri Lanka, this county’s selection of wildlife is not to be missed. Famous for its awe-inspiring scenery, Madagascar has enough sightseeing opportunities to keep you on your toes. It’s particularly loved by hikers, as there’s a wonderful array of natural beauties to keep them occupied; from cliffs and canyons, to waterfalls and mountain ranges, there’s never a dull moment. So if you’re looking for an adventure this New Year, then take a trip to Madagascar’s Parc National de l'Isalo; you won’t regret it!
