Earlier this week, we interviewed Paul Bennett, of Context Travels, about his small group seminars led by scholars. Paul recently contacted me about a new addition to Context Travels' Seminars!

PIZZA-MAKING WORKSHOP -

BRINGS TRAVELERS INTO THE BELLY OF NAPLES

Context Naples organizes a hands-on pizza making workshop for foodies, families, and independent travelers.

Naples -  Pulsing with sights, sounds, and smells, downtown Naples is an
intrepid traveler’s paradise. Context Travel has long organized its cultural walking seminars of the city’s museums, churches, and side streets drawing on its network of resident scholars.

In 2008, it will take its programs one step further with a hands-on pizza making workshop.

Context Naples’ Pizza Making Workshop will begin with a short walk through the Spaccanapoli neighborhood, one of Naples’ most vibrant areas, led by a Context docent who is a long-time resident of the city. Along the way groups will sample such culinary specialties as taralli (a traditional biscuit), Neapolitan chocolates, or baba’ (small rum cakes). After discussing and tasting some of the culinary traditions of Naples, the group moves on to a local pizzeria where a trained pizzaiolo (pizza maker) gives a seminar on proper pizza-making technique. Participants will get their hands doughy and make their own real pizza. Then, lunchtime!

“We’re constantly searching for new ways to help our clients connect with the place they’re visiting and come to a deeper understanding of its culture and traditions,” says Petulia Melideo, Context’s manager for Naples. “So when one of our docents in Naples came to us with the idea of developing a walk on the culinary traditions of the city, a pizza workshop seemed perfect.”

Founded by National Geographic writer Paul Bennett and designer Lani Bevacqua, Context is a network of English-speaking scholars and professionals—including art historians, writers, architects, and gastronomes—who organize and lead didactic walking seminars across five cities: Rome, Naples, Florence, Paris, and Venice.

In May 2006, Travel + Leisure named Context one of the top European tour companies for its innovative approach to travel and the depth of its programs. To learn more about Context visit its website at: www.contexttravel.com
