It is imperative to recognise that that what women migrants and refugees are faced with are often a result of systemic and societal factors in their host country.

How to Overcome the Intimidation of Moving Abroad

The idea of getting to move abroad is exhilarating; not a lot of people get the opportunity to strategize about moving abroad, getting to change their environment, learning a new language, learning about a culture, and so on. Needless to say, all of this is incredibly exciting.  Leaving behind the familiar and stepping into the unknown can be a challenging experience.

It’s November: the time of full speed ahead. The holiday break is in sight, but there seems like there’s always more to do, more decisions to be made, more work to be done, and needing to have a more focused approach. Whether you feel like huddling under a blanket in your self-sufficient pillow fort or forging ahead with the force of a bullet train, sometimes the world doesn’t give us a choice—and the only thing left to do is the next right thing.

All You Need to Know to Teach Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead

“The word death is not pronounced in New York, Paris or in London,
because it burns the lips. The Mexican, in contrast, is familiar with death,
jokes about it, caresses it, sleeps with it, celebrates it; it is one of his
favorite toys and his most steadfast love.”
-Octavio Paz, The Labyrinth of Solitude, 1961.

Halloween reads to go along with treats

Yesterday I kept a room of 22 costumed 2nd graders in my daughter’s class transfixed for a whole ten minutes.

And this was after their school Halloween parade and after they’d exhausted all the games we’d planned for the in-room party and while they were eating cupcakes, grapes, and caramel-dipped apple slices. (Well, I guess the cupcakes helped keep their mouths a little occupied.)
